Mixed feelings as election boundary review looms for Cape Breton riding

Nova Scotia is having a new federal electoral map — and community meetings are underway to get input on the proposed boundary adjustments that will see Cape Breton-Canso driving develop west to include things like Antigonish town and county.

The Central Nova driving would cease to exist and the new using would be named Cape Breton-Antigonish.

But Cape Breton University political science professor Tom Urbaniak explained to Data Early morning Cape Breton the doable boundary changes could not sufficiently characterize rural populations.

“I believe that would shift the centre of gravity of the current Cape Breton–Canso riding to infrastructure-wealthy Antigonish,” Urbaniak stated. “So it is a elementary adjust.”

Inhabitants raises in Metro Halifax — and decreases in Cape Breton and the japanese mainland — have led to a ripple impact of boundary variations to guarantee votes in each riding have the exact same excess weight.

The commission desires to keep populations of about 88,000 in each riding.

“I am quite sympathetic to the commission’s process,” said Urbaniak, noting that the proposed area is “geographically unwieldy.”

“It can be a using of pretty distinct economies, unique language and cultural communities,” he claimed.

Generally a obstacle

Rodger Cuzner is a former Liberal MP for Cape Breton-Canso, says boundary alterations are usually controversial.  “It is normally a obstacle, there is no doubt about that.”

“When I initially bought likely, it was Bras d’Or-Cape Breton. Prior to that, it was Cape Breton–East Richmond,” Cuzner explained.

But he does not believe incorporating Antigonish County to the driving is a negative matter.

“I consider the people are pretty a great deal the exact same. You know, it really is about fishing and farming and loved ones and fiddles,” he mentioned. “We are not that various.”

Cuzner stated a single challenge upcoming MPs could confront is assembly with new group teams in a geographically extensive riding. But he explained it is no additional hard than traveling to constituents in densely populated city metropolitan areas.

“Some of the downtown ridings in the greater Toronto space may well only be a few blocks by a few blocks, but they go up 40 and 50 and 60 tales,” he said.

“So we shell out a lot of windshield time where they commit a whole lot of elevator time.”

Public consultations right up until June 28

The 1st of nine public meetings seeking feedback on possible boundary alterations took spot in Sydney on Monday evening.

Justice Cindy Bourgeois of the Nova Scotia Court of Attractiveness chairs the three-member electoral boundaries commission. She said 5 people today offered for the fee.

“The predominant topic that we listened to was that there was a motivation to have the two ridings in Cape Breton mirror a rural riding and to mirror an urban driving, which would see our proposed boundaries in Cape Breton shifting somewhat,” said Bourgeois.

“Which is seriously the powerful message that we were being specified by the presenters.”

Seven public meetings are set to take place all over June in Antigonish, Truro, Kentville, Yarmouth, Bridgewater, Cole Harbour, and Decrease Sackville. A separate virtual meeting will be held June 27 for anyone unable to show up at a neighborhood conference.

“A proposal that helps make feeling for a particular site, of course, will be considered,” explained Bourgeois.

Bourgeois mentioned the deadline for penned submissions has been extended to June 28.

The recent federal redistribution system started in October 2021. Improvements will not occur into result until finally April 2024 at the earliest, according to the commission’s web-site.
