Oakland cyclist killed in hit-and-run Thursday night

OAKLAND – A 42-year-outdated male was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver as he was riding his bicycle in downtown Oakland Thursday evening.

Shortly just before 8:30 p.m., the Oakland man was driving his bike on Jefferson Avenue around 14th Road when he was strike by a motor vehicle that was traveling in the same course, according to Oakland law enforcement.

The bike owner was using in a designated bike lane at the time, law enforcement said.

He was taken to a hospital where by he was pronounced lifeless.

His identify has not but been produced.

The cyclist’s dying will come just times before the Metropolis Council is set to take up the 14th Street Security Project, which would repave the street, eliminate just one lane of traffic in each path, physically separate bikes lanes from automobile lanes and make some pedestrian protection improvements, among other matters.

On Friday, Oakland Town Councilmember Sheng Thao took to social media to give sympathy to the man’s beloved kinds and to urge action on road improvements.

“The demise on 14th avenue was solely preventable and speaks to the urgent need for tasks like this,” Thao stated on Twitter. “Nobody need to dread for their life although going for walks, biking, or driving on our streets.”

The city was awarded a roughly $10.6 million Caltrans grant to establish the $18.3 million project again in 2016 and the Town Council could vote to get started the advancements alongside 14th Street at its meeting Tuesday.

In a report to the council, the Oakland Section of Transportation calls the place “one of Oakland’s best-harm corridors.”
