San Diego Padres star shortstop Fernando Tatis suffered “minor scrapes” in an accident on Sunday in his native Dominican Republic, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. According to Dominican reporter Baudilio Jiménez, Tatis was driving a motorcycle at the time of the accident and was treated at a nearby medical center. By Tuesday, Tatis was said to have resumed normal activities. Because of the ongoing owner lockout, the Padres are not able to comment on the status of MLB players.

Tatis, 22, is coming off a 2021 season in which he batted .282/.360/.611 (166 OPS+) with an NL-leading 42 home runs and 25 stolen bases in 130 games for the Padres.

For those efforts, Tatis finished third in the NL MVP balloting behind Juan Soto of the Nationals and winner Bryce Harper of the Phillies. Tatis across parts of three MLB seasons owns an OPS+ of 160, which is an exceptional figure for a young player capable of manning the premium position of shortstop.

Tatis also just concluded the first year of a 14-year, $340 million contract extension he signed earlier this year with San Diego. While injury issues have been a steady concern for Tatis throughout his young career, he seems to have avoided serious harm in this accident.
