Fort Bliss soldier dies after motorcycle crash in East El Paso

A young Fort Bliss soldier has died after being hospitalized for five days following a motorcycle crash in East El Paso.

Spc. Ethan Harvey Mandel, 20, was mortally injured in an April 5 motorcycle crash on George Dieter Drive near Trawood Drive, according to El Paso police and an online fundraising page set up by family.

“I’m so very sad and sorry tell you that our beautiful boy Ethan lefts us yesterday evening. Our hearts are broken,” a GoFundMe page stated Sunday.

About 1:15 a.m. on April 5, Mandel was riding a 2008 Honda CBR motorcycle southbound on George Dieter Drive at a high speed, police said.

Mandel failed to negotiate a curve, hopped a curb and hit landscaping bushes and rocks on the center median, a police news release stated.

Motorcycle passenger dies in Lyman crash, driver injured

A Massachusetts woman died this morning after being thrown from a motorcycle during a crash.

Maine State Police say a Massachusetts woman died Saturday morning when she was thrown from a motorcycle during a crash. According to police, 50-year-old Anne Stout was the passenger on the back of the motorcycle and 51-year-old Gerald Gibson of Sanford was the driver. Police say the crash happened on Old Berwick Road in Lyman around 11:30 a.m. when Gibson drove on the soft shoulder, left the road and then crashed into a small ditch. Police say both Gibson and Stout were not wearing helmets. Gibson was transported to Maine Medical Center with minor injuries.

Beverly Cleary, the beloved children’s book author of the “Ramona” series and “The Mouse and the Motorcycle,” has died. She was 104.

Yes, 104. Cleary’s first book, “Henry Huggins,” was published more than 70 years ago, way back in 1950.

Cleary died Thursday in Carmel, California, where she’d lived since the 1960s, according to her publisher HarperCollins. Cleary was born Beverly Bunn on April 12, 1916, in McMinnville, Oregon.
