Wilkes County fatal crash leaves 1 motorcyclist dead
NC State Highway Patrol said that one person has died in a collision in Wilkes County on Monday.On the afternoon of Feb. 14, NC State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal crash on NC 268.Investigation of the incident showed that an Oldsmobile Bravada was towing a trailer while traveling south on Edwards Lakeview Drive.The driver of the Oldsmobile attempted to turn left onto NC 268, failing to yield to a westbound Suzuki GSX-R750 motorcycle already in the lane.The motorcycle overturned and the driver collided with the trailer. Matthew Curry, 39, was identified as the driver of the motorcycle. He was critically injured in the crash and transported from the EMS, later succumbing to his injuries at High Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.Reginald Shumate, 56, was identified as the driver of the Oldsmobile and was not injured in the crash. Shumate was arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.An initial investigation does not indicate impairment as a contributing factor to the collision, officials said.
