Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, who designed headlines after winning an NCAA Division I countrywide championship, responded to critics who say that she attained an unfair edge competing from women.
Thomas expended 3 several years swimming for the Penn men’s team, then joined the women’s squad for the 2021-2022 period.
“The major false impression, I consider, is the reason I transitioned,” Thomas told ABC News and ESPN. “People today will say, ‘Oh, she just transitioned so she would have an benefit, so she could get.’ I transitioned to be happy, to be real to myself.”
Thomas received the 500 freestyle at the NCAA swimming and diving championships in March, just a month right after 16 of her teammates wrote a letter to the university and the Ivy League declaring that Thomas ought to not be competing versus ladies.
